Yes. Have sharp scissors on hand the first five or so times you pull them out of the washing machine; trim the threads off as they come loose, before you throw them in the dryer. If you find that you trimmed unevenly, you can easily fix this with those same scissors.
If you want the fringe to be flat, either dry the cut-offs on a hanger (don’t put them in the dryer) or learn to iron. I’m lazy — I put them on the hanger. 😉
