It’s a matter of reliability (if we’re talking about reasonable approach) and/or status. About the latter, the general idea is that the more primitive people are, the more they’re likely to measure everything in society by status, making it natural to try and gain as much of this “resource” as possible. Brands carry certain influence, so the easiest primitive way to get or show high status (as a social rank) is to use (wear, eat, drive, etc) brand name products, which includes shoes.
